After many days of rain I felt like climbing to a peak to see a nice sunset. I was undecided between Mount Antola and Point Martin, but in the end I opted for the latter. I began the path at 14.15, thus very late, knowing that I would have returned in the dark. Even thought it was November 4th, it was still a very warm day and the breeze that blew form the west was not bothersome at all. The beginning of the path was not particularly difficult and it wound through the classic Mediterranean shrubland. After walking for a half -hour we had to cross a beautiful “orrido”, a deep gorge hollowed out by the Baiardetta stream where you can replenish your water and, in summer, cool off in one of its many pools. This is the last place to replenish your water supply.

From this point on the path became much steeper and the view opened up onto the surrounding valleys. 
After an hour of walking at an altitude of about 480 meters, you enter a needleleaf forest, ideal for taking a break on very hot days. 
Just outside of the small forest, in autumn, I have always seen many mantises as I did this time as well.

At this point the walk became a little more difficult, not particularly difficult, but required more attention and it was necessary to use my hands to climb the trail. The heat of the rock on my hands was a nice and unexpected sensation on this late November afternoon. 
In the meantime on the coast a light haze had formed and threatening clouds were quickly advancing from the northwest.

At 17.00 I was right under Point Martin, about 15 minutes away from the peak. I decided to turn back because I did not want to complete the final part where I would have had to climb with my hands and in the dark. I knew that there would be no moon and I would have spent a lot of time taking pictures of the sunset, so I decided to retrace my steps and photograph the sunset just after the rocky part of the trail. It was not one of the best sunsets, but being at an altitude of 1000 meters just steps from the coast is always sensational.

On my way back it was pitch dark and I could not see anything. In this photo underneath it is possible to see the eyes of a Strigiform (owl, hoot owl, screech owl, etc . . . ). I discovered this particular detail only after getting home when I began to select photographs.

Dopo molti giorni di pioggia avevo voglia di salire su una vetta per vedere un bel tramonto. Indeciso tra l’Antola e Punta Martin alla fine ho optato per quest’ultima.
Sono partito dal sentiero alle 14.15, quindi molto in ritardo, sapendo che sarei tornato con il buio.
Benché fosse il 4 novembre la giornata era molto calda, ed il leggero vento che soffiava da ovest non dava assolutamente fastidio.
La parte iniziale del sentiero non presenta particolari difficoltà e si snoda nella classica macchia mediterranea.
Dopo mezz’ora di cammino bisogna attraversare un “bellissimo orrido”, il torrente Baiardetta, dove si può fare rifornimento d’acqua e, d’estate, rinfrescarsi in una delle numerose pozze d’acqua. Questo è l’ultimo punto dove poter fare rifornimento d’acqua.

Da questo punto in poi il sentiero diventa decisamente più ripido ed il panorama si apre sulle valli circostanti.
Dopo un’ora di cammino, a circa 480 metri di quota, si entra in un bel bosco di aghifoglie, l’ideale per fare una pausa nelle giornate più calde.
Appena poco fuori dal piccolo bosco, nel periodo autunnale, ho sempre incontrato parecchie mantidi ed anche questa volta non è stato da meno.

A questo punto la camminata diventa leggermente più impegnativa, dove più di una volta è necessario usare le mani per salire sul sentiero, comunque nulla di particolarmente difficile, occorre solo alzare leggermente il livello di attenzione. A questo proposito, il calore della roccia, è stata una piacevole ed inaspettata sensazione in un tardo pomeriggio di novembre.
Nel frattempo mentre sulla costa si è alzata una leggera foschia, minacciose nuvole avanzano velocemente da nord-ovest.

Alle 17.00 ero proprio sotto a Punta Martin, a circa 15 minuti dalla vetta ed ho deciso di tornare indietro perché non volevo fare la parte finale, quella dove bisogna aiutarsi con le mani, al buio. Sapevo che non c’era luna e che avrei perso parecchio tempo a fotografare il tramonto, così ho deciso di tornare sui miei passi e fermarmi a fotografare il tramonto subito dopo le parti rocciose.
Non è stato un tramonto dei migliori, ma essere a circa 1000 metri di altezza a pochi passi dalla costa è sempre una bellissima sensazione.

Sulla via del ritorno il buio era assoluto e non vedevo ad un palmo dal naso. Nella foto qui sotto è possibile vedere gli occhi di uno strigiforme (civetta, guvo, barbagianni, ecc…). Mi sono accorto di questo particolare solo una volta giunto a casa, quando ho iniziato a selezionare le fotografie.
